Good Morning Granola

Over Christmas break my sister in law passed on You On a Diet and I'm trying to incorporate Dr. Oz's ideas into my life. Of course, with our remodel and the boys, things move at glacial speed around here, but I'm happy to report some modest progress. Actually, I think I've gained a little weight since Christmas, but I'm eating healthier and am developing an exercise routine. So far that amounts to a 30 minute brisk walk each night and I'm trying to add one floor exercise a week starting with abs. And this week, I added supplements to my regime: multi-vitamin, vitamin D3, and fish oil. My doctor also suggested I add Juice Plus, but I don't have any of that yet.

Part of my plan is to eat breakfast every day - something that I have mostly stopped doing since having children. And finally I get to the part that I actually wanted to share with you: a granola recipe my sister gave me! I made it this past weekend and it's easy and delicious. Try it!

Good Morning Granola

Combine following in a roasting pan or large broiler pan:
8 cups raw oatmeal
4 cups walnuts - chopped or coarsely ground
2 cups wheat germ

Add to grains:
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup boiling water

Stir into above:
1/2 cup canola oil

Bake at 200 degrees F until desired doneness (about 2 hours)

Six thick slices of bacon; three eggs with heavy cream scrambled and cooked omelet style with extra sharp cheddar, cooked in the bacon fat. With 2 english muffins buttered and cherry jelly. And chocolate milk to top it off. Now that food. EB

Well, maybe for a special occasion! Tell you what - you can cook that for me when you visit and we just won't tell Dr. Oz!

4 cups chopped or coarsely ground ???

I think you missed an ingredient. Dr Oz would be proud of me - I've lost 30 pounds since September and I do 60 minutes of cardio 5 days a week and at least 70 sit ups a day plus weightlifting...but hey, who's bragging. It does help to not have small kids to donate that much time to exercising...although running around after 2 active boys is definitely exercise - it may not count as being cardivascular :)

Wow, your doc recommended Juice Plus? What a jerk. He must be selling it, either directly or through a so-called "wellness coordinator". Juice Plus is the biggest ripoff in the world. Don't fall for it.

Hi Emme,
Oops! I did miss an ingredient! It should read: chopped or coarsely ground walnuts! Sorry about that!

Wow, your exercise routine is impressive! Great work in losing all that weight!! I would love to have more time to exercise...oh, and to read, and sleep, and eat :)For now, I'm just happy to be able to take a walk every day!

Juice plus is a rip-off? It was actually my OBGYN who recommended it when we had a conversation about nutrition and supplements. I respect her and have never had a reason not to trust her. On the other hand, her husband is a nutritionist and I found out later, is a distributor of Juice Plus. Hmmm.

I'd love to hear what you know about Juice Plus and where you learned it.

Wow, your OBGYN is pushing Juice Plus. That's sad. I just finished reading an excellent article on why Juice Plus should NEVER be taken during pregnancy.
http://juiceplusresearch.blogspot.com/2008/02/readers-respond-feb-14-2008-side.html

The 2 best sources for JP info I've found so far are the Wikipedia site and the Juice Plus Research Blog.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juice_Plus
http://juiceplusresearch.blogspot.com/

Those 2 sites have tons of articles that explain why Juice Plus is such a lousy product. The experts at the blog site are also really good about answering questions if you email them.

BTW, which OBGYN are you using and who was he nutritionist who was plugging JP. Curious to know if they are the same people who tried to oush it on me.

Ok, I read the Wiki article on Juice Plus and I'm glad I did. It doesn't sound like something I'd be willing to spend $40.00 a month on. Getting right to the point - yes, it does sound like a ripoff! And creepy that O.J. Simpson was a spokesman for it early on! Thanks for the info!

for anyone else reading the Juice Plus commentary - this is an interesting article by a physician.

and, yes, OJ did stump for them, right before he killed Nicole and Ron

I also thought the part about John Wise was creepy. The guy worked for the most notorious MLM scam-vitamin company in history and then bailed just as the FDA was shutting them down. He then went straight to work for the Juice Plus folks and wrote up all of their research -- that's the same research that JP sales reps brag about.

I rarely trust anonymous comments.
You tend to wonder why they are anonymous..
Also if you are trusting Wikipedia for sound information, think again, most teachers tell their students not to use Wiki as a source of information. Anyone can edit the information.
